Basketball season is upon us! LOUYAA Basketball will again offer three different levels of play throughout our program with a focus on creating options that best fit your child’s skill level. Our central goal continues to center around making the experience the best it can be for our participants. There are always challenges to this effort but we have made some revisions to the team development process that we feel will support a better product. As is always the case we need coaches and people willing to assist with various responsibilities. Please consider volunteering your time as a coach, league director, or evaluations participant. The commitment is minimal and the reward is great. You do not need to be an expert you just need a willingness to take part. The success of our program depends on volunteers. It does not happen often but in the event we do not get enough coaches for a particular league we may be forced to limit enrollment and/or offerings.
Tier 1 (Mid Maryland Travel)– NONE
Tier 2 (Select teams)– MYBA has adjusted their league standards to allow for students to play based on grade. In the past the association used birth date and year, specifically September 1st as a cutoff, to decipher appropriate participation levels. Beginning this year the league will use grades. This is consistent with what LOUYAA has always done so the change is minimal for us. Please note: U10 = 3rd & 4th grade; U12 = 5th & 6th grade; U14 = 7th & 8th grade; U16 = 9th & 10th grade; U19 = 11th & 12 grade.
Tier 3 (Intramural)– In an effort to develop balanced teams we are extending our evaluations process beyond the traditional weekend offering. New this year LOUYAA Basketball will utilize the November 3-18 timeframe as ‘large group’ practice sessions. Participants will be placed into smaller groups rather than assigned to teams during this 16-day period. During this time they will practice on multiple occasions allowing coaches to gain better perspective regarding their abilities. The end result should be a more informed “draft” process for coaches. Teams will be developed on/around November 19th or 20th.
After reviewing the information below please feel free to forward questions to the commissioner (Arnie McGaha) at email@example.com.
Register for Winter Basketball
Tier 1- Mid Maryland/Travel information:
This is the highest level of winter basketball available to middle school aged participants with programs competing in the Mid Maryland League. Teams are comprised of students within their respective middle school/feeder districts and are selected following a tryout process with coaches. Two different levels are offered for boys and girls (junior varsity and varsity). Tryout information is listed below and is subject to change. Any changes will be accompanied by a general announcement through this website and/or at the designated middle school. For more information please visit the ‘Mid Maryland Boys Basketball’ or ‘Mid Maryland Girls Basketball’ websites.
1) Your child must be registered in order to try out- 2019 Try Outs will be announced both on this website as well as within individual schools. Anticipated start dates are around October 7, 2019.
2) Payment is not due at the time of registration. A separate payment link will be sent to families once teams have been selected.
3) Please note that FCPS middle schools have NO affiliation with Mid Maryland teams, they are associated by name only.
4) Students must live within the school district of the Mid Maryland team for which they elect to tryout.
Tier 2- LOUYAA Select (teams will compete in the MYBA league)
LOUYAA Select is the next level of basketball offered and includes a tryout process. As a general rule this option is for our stronger intramural level players as well as those players who are borderline Mid Maryland level but were not selected. LOUYAA Select teams compete in the Monocacy Youth Basketball Association’s (MYBA) Division 1 league. D-1 is available for BOYS only as MYBA does not offer Division 1 for girls programs. LOUYAA will enter girl’s teams in MYBA if/when we are unable to form our own ‘in-house’ league of at least four (4) teams.
LOUYAA Select teams will be formed at the U10 and U12 levels (boys) and U14 (girls). As indicated above eligibility for MYBA is based on your child’s grade, i.e. U10 = 3rd & 4th grade; U12 = 5th & 6th grade; U14 = 7th & 8th grade; U16 = 9th & 10th grade; U19 = 11th & 12 grade. There is no school district restriction with regard to these teams.

All activities take place at Kemptown ES (Dec 8, 15, Jan 5, 12, 19 & 26).
All teams in the following leagues will practice one night per week throughout the season. The practice site and time are determined by the coach and remain consistent unless school cancellations dictate a need to move to an alternate location. Game sites:

If enrollment allows we will do so and notify families accordingly. All teams in the 2nd/3rd league will have 6:00-7:30 practices, site TBA based on coach’s selection. ‘Coach on the floor’ games are played at New Market Elementary on Saturdays beginning Dec 8 and ending the first week of March.
2018 Evaluation Dates: November 10, 13, 16, & 17 @ New Market ES, times & groups TBA

That schedule will be shared by November 1st. Coaches will lead the evaluation sessions and meet on November 19th to develop balanced teams before reaching out to families. We attempt accommodate team placement requests but do not guarantee anything. Our first priority is to balance the teams as fairly as possible to make games and league play competitive and fun for all participants. Games for this league are played at Spring Ridge ES on Saturdays beginning Dec 8 and ending the first week of March. Teams in this league practice one time per week (site/time TBA by coach).

2018 Evaluation Dates: November 3, 10 & 17 @ New Market Middle, times & groups TBA
Girls 6th-8th: U12 is for 6th grade girls and U14 for 7th/8th graders. Because we usually do not have enough to form at least a 4-team ‘in-house’ league girls in this age range will compete as LOUYAA in the Monocacy Youth Basketball Association (MYBA). See above for specific workout session schedule information. David Crawmer will be leading our U12 workouts and assist with team development. We are still in need of another U12 coach as well as a U14 coach. Games for this league are played on Saturdays or Sundays at various schools around Frederick or Carroll counties. Home games are designated at Oakdale Middle School on Saturdays.
Boys 8th/9th: Because we need to wait for high school tryouts to finish this group will not hold evaluations until Sunday, November 18th at Oakdale Elementary Recreation Center. Last names ending A-L will work out from 1:00-2:15 with M-Z to follow 2:30-3:45. On-time registration is extended until Nov 20 to accommodate families. Games for this league are played on Sundays at either Oakdale Elementary Rec Center or New Market Middle.
